Tournament Tips

There are some key terms that you should be aware of when you are going into play at a poker tournament, first of all an Entry Fee is the fee that a player has to pay to the house to be able to enter the game, the Buy In is the amount of money that it costs after the entry fee to take part in the poker tournament and to get chips, a Re-Buy is the option of purchasing more chips at certain times during the game, and an Add-On is the option to buy more chips at certain times within the game regardless of the amount of chips in a players possession.

When you are going in to play at a poker tournament all of the regular poker tips usually apply, in addition to that some certain adjustments are necessary. In tournament play going for the huge wins early on may repairable if you lose, but later on if you bet to aggressively you run the chance of getting eliminated very quickly before you even realize what you have done. One of the most important things that you can remember when you are playing is to watch closely what the other people at the table are doing, so that you can take in to consideration how they play each hand. If you are playing a single table tournament you should be careful of playing aggressively on suited cards, the reason for this is that their value is lower than expected since there are so many people the probability of getting a winning hand is very low, if you decide to call make sure that it is in the beginning of the game. You should be able to follow some tournament tips so that when you sit down to play you will know what to do and how to play.

First of all you need to know that there are many different types of tournaments that you can take part in and you should know which one you are playing. You can play any of the following: Major Tournaments, Minor Tournaments, Free Roll Tournaments, Re-buy Tournaments, Guaranteed Tournaments, Satellite Tournaments, Shootout Tournaments, and Freezeout Tournaments. Depending on the type of tournament that you are playing in you will have to decide whether you are going to play aggressively or whether you are going to play tightly. Playing tightly means that you are going to be very conservative with your money. The blinds near the beginning of the game are fairly low, which gives players much more leeway when you are trying to figure out which hands to play and which ones to through away. Now if you have a pretty good pre-flop like an Ace-King, you should really play a little bit more conservatively because if you play to hard you will end up making everyone else fold and you won’t win the pot.

What you should always be trying to do in the beginning of a tournament is to keep your stack decent so you will still be able to be around for further rounds. Going towards the middle of the game the blinds change a lot and that needs to be taken into account, because the blinds are raised which means that if you have to put up a blind you are invested quite a bit more money. The best tip that you can have for tournament play is that if you are in an early position at the table is to aggressively make the first raise, and if another person raises behind you fold right away if you have a weak hand, bluffing is not going to work. In order to make it to the final round you shoot for winning the blind at least one time per round. If you do this you will be in the position to do practically whatever you want to. If you aren’t in this position play conservatively and call only if you have a very strong hand that way you can still stay in and enjoy the game.
