Seven Card Stud Tips When you want to begin playing Seven Card Stud, especially if you are new to the game, there are a few Seven Card Stud Tips that you should know about. This article’s goal is to collect as many of those tips as possible in one place for you, so that you do not have to search all over the internet to find out the information that you need. Before begin offering tips, we would like to make sure that you understand the basic terminology that used in the game. This information will help keep you making errors of some kinds. 1. High Card - Any Card from a Ten through an Ace 2. Low Card - Any Card from Two through Nine 3. Split Pair - A starting hand in which you have a pair where one is showing and one is hidden 4. Concealed Pair - Any pair that is in “the pocket” 5. Door Cards - The exposed cards that are used to decide who starts a round Now that we have covered the basic terminology, on to the Seven Card Stud Tips. The most popular and useful tip that we have come across is to “Check” every chance that you get so that you can get all the free cards possible. There are several betting rounds in Seven Card Stud, and it can get expensive. Next, whenever you find yourself starting with a high pair, it is recommended that you “Fast Play” in order to eliminate as many of the other players as quickly as possible. To “Fast Play” means to Bet, Raise and Re-Raise the other players to weed out the weaker players quickly. If you start out with a Draw Hand (any hand that you need other cards to complete) such as three to a Straight or three to a Flush, we suggest that you “Slow Play” to keep other players in the game and build up the pot size. To “Slow Play” means to just check and call each hand in order to keep other players in the game and increase the pot odds. When you are lucky enough to start with a three of a kind, it is strongly recommended that you “Slow Play” at least until the fifth card is dealt. That way, most of the other players will more than likely stick around, and the pot size will be increased. As in any Poker-based game, it is a good idea to study the other players at the table. If you pay close attention to them for long enough, you will be able to pick up on how they play certain hands, and what they do when they have good, bad and neutral hands. This will provide a good advantage for you, if done correctly. Get caught bluffing every now and then. If you don’t mix up the way you play, the other players will pick up on this and be able to tell what kind of hand you have by the way you play it. So, if you let yourself get caught bluffing occasionally, you will keep your opponents guessing and they won't be able to tell whether you are bluffing or if you actually have a good hand. Another key piece of information that you should have is that the first four cards that you are dealt at the beginning of each game are the most important keys to winning at Seven-Card Stud. If you are able to lay out a game plan with those first four cards, and you are able to follow that plan, you will be able to pretty much set yourself up as a strong favorite to win. Unless you can beat the board, or they are concealed, it is not a good idea to begin with a low card pair. Never play a three to a Low Straight or a three to a Low Flush; it is too risky. Always watch the board. Keep an eye open for any cards that cancel out the hand you are trying to make. Also, look for dangerously high or good hands showing on your opponents door cards. Play cautiously and don’t be afraid to fold if it looks like the tide is turning against you. Beware of the paired door card! If one of the other players is playing a pair in his starting hand, and pairs his first door card, the odds are two out of three that the door card is part of his pair. A paired door card presents a strong possibility that the player has a three of a kind. If you see that your entire hand can be beaten by what is showing in another players up cards, unless you are playing a very strong draw hand, FOLD. Always try to find reasons to fold. Make sure to look for any dead cards in the denomination that you need and for two or three dead cards in the suit that you are drawing to. Look for too much strong competition developing for the winning hand. When you are actively looking for reasons to fold, and can’t find one, then you can safely proceed aggressively.
