Player Etiquette

If you have never played at an online poker room there are certain things that you need to know about the etiquette of the game. There are things that you do and don’t do when you are ready to play the game. Knowing a little bit about the rules of the game that you are gong to play and the etiquette of the game will help you to have a better time. A lot of the time you will have to put your name down to get to a table because so many different people who want to play that you have to wait your turn.

One of the first things that you have to is to choose a betting limit for the table that you are going to play. Since you are a newcomer to the game you should start of with a low limit, this way you don’t have to worry about losing a lot of money, all you have to worry about is having fun and learning to better your game. If you find a limit that is called a spread limit table this is a good option for you because it means that you can bet or raise any amount between the two numbers that are specified on the table.

Once you have figured out what kind of limit table you want to play at it is time for you to buy in and start playing. When you buy in, you must at least buy in for the posted table minimum. One very important thing that you have to realize is that even though some other people might fold or call out of turn, don’t do it yourself, its not proper for them to do it and it is considered rude. Another reason is that it gives the players before you an unfair advantage, because once they know how you are going to act they can better tell how they should act.

Of equal importance you should always know how to handle your cards, this is very important because it can keep you from showing other people your cards if you are playing in a brick and mortar poker room. When you first start you may find it difficult to peek at your cards without exposing them to other people. Make sure to leave your cards on the table and in plain site at all times, if you take them out of site then it is grounds for killing your hand which means that you can be disqualified from that round of play. When you are playing you should know to protect your cards, by protecting your cards we mean put a chip on your cards. If you don’t protect your cards you run the chance of two different things happening, one of which is that the dealer might scoop up your cards and take them because unprotected cards are a sign that you have folded your hand. The second thing that might happen is that another players cards might accidentally touch your cards which will automatically disqualify your hand and you lose your money in the pot.

When you are playing poker the hands will end one of three ways, either one person bets and everyone else folds, on the final round and at least one person calls or everybody checks on the final round. If everyone folds to a bet then the one remaining bettor does not have to show their cards. If you get called on a bet it is not mandatory but it is expected so that every player can tell what you have. All of the etiquette that is outlined above are things that you should really make to remember because one thing that you don’t want to do is make enemies at the table. Remember if you need help, ask the dealer and they will help you it is part of their job.
